A little history



The origins

Trarego, formerly "Trargho" derives from the Latin "tradigum" which means passage: very probably indicates the transit zone from which branched off the trail and Oggiogno the way up the mountain.
Human settlement began slowly over the centuries and intensified in the Middle Ages. The first settlements took advantage of the horizontal bands and the terraces left by prehistoric times for crops and livestock.

With the birth of the countries also began the construction of churches and chapels. The churches of Trarego Viggiona and long remained under the jurisdiction of the Parish of Cannobio, which were two chapels.
The chapel was a child in church, celebrated the Mass, but not administered fundamental sacraments such as baptism. The dependence Parish was also an economic one as having the church property that was growing in the territory of the chapels, collected the tithes.
The needs of worship because of the proliferation of the population and the difficulty of transportation of remains to the mother church for the funeral and burial, led to the transformation of the chapels in the parishes. Viggiona parish became independent in 1492, after Trarego in 1513.


Economic developments

The testimonies of those golden times for tourism of our lands can be found in the splendid Art Nouveau villas that still dominate most scenic spots in the country and in the facades of the big hotels now abandoned. Traditional activities

The City of Trarego Viggiona was formed in 1928 with the union of the two fractions.
At that time there were many shops and craftsmen who worked in the country: there were shoemakers, carpenters, the barber, the baker, the butcher, grocery stores edible and a shop. For the supply of stores traders descended on foot to Cannero and the boat went to Luino or Intra. To return the goods were transported to the village on a donkey or mule.
